History of CONTACT Lubbock
Originally, CONTACT began in Australia in the
1960s in response to the need for a listening line for people in crisis.
It became a worldwide movement and is now known as Life Line International,
which includes a subsidiary called CONTACT USA.
CONTACT Lubbock, Inc. has a long history in our community dating back
to 1969 when Joe Matt Smith, president of the Lubbock Association of Churches,
appointed a steering committee to organize and bring into being a CONTACT
Center in Lubbock.
Robert Wells was appointed the first Executive Director of CONTACT Lubbock,
Inc. and on June 15, 1971, CONTACT opened its phone lines to the public.
CONTACT Lubbock, Inc. was the 22nd CONTACT Center to open in the country,
and in 1972, CONTACT Lubbock, Inc. received full accreditation from CONTACT
USA.
